Book-to-Movie Inspirations: Stephenie Meyer's 'New Moon'

"The term "new moon" refers to the phase of the moon opposite a full moon. It is when the sun is on the opposite side of the moon from us and thus the bright side of the moon is not visible from earth. This is the darkest kind of night. New Moon is the darkest period of Bella's life." -Stephenie Meyer, author

Keeping along with the vampire romance phenomenon, we've now added a werewolf to the mix! For those familiar with Stephenie Meyer's Twilight series, Bella Swan suffers the absence of her true love, 'vegetarian' vampire Edward Cullen and his 'family', after a disastrous incident at her birthday party which nearly resulted in her death. Edward decides to leave Bella, and wipe clean any existence of him in her life so that she can start anew. In the depression she suffers, she turns to childhood friend Jacob Black, unbeknownst to her that he is of a long line of 'werewolf protectors', Jacob being a direct descendant of this tribe.

Ladies and gentlemen, the 'Jacob' necklace:

Here's a list of materials used:
  • red jade howling wolf pendant
  • small red jade star beads
  • lava rock coins
  • black wood tube beads
  • black dyed hemp twine
  • chain, clasp, headpins, earwires (for matching earrings)
He's described in the book as having russet-coloured fur, and eyes that are unmistakably recognizable to Bella. What luck did I have when I was browsing at one of my favourite stores, Earthworks, and found this red jade howling wolf! Even better - only for $1!

An even more fantastic find were smaller star beads made of the same red jasper, which I thought was brilliant to carry over the literal 'twilight' element. The lava rock coins with its small craters are meant to be 'moons', with the stars around them.

Jacob is a member of the Quilete tribe, and lives on the reservation, and I wanted the overall look of the necklace to be more tribal and earthy. I used as little metal elements in the necklace as possible in homage to the culture of his tribe.

I'm very excited for New Moon to be released in theatres, because it will be exciting to see what kind of adaptation it will become. We've already heard rumours of additional plot elements in the movie that aren't in the books. What do you think - will additional plot elements in the movie distract from the original story? Do you think it might ruin or add to the story?
